A VISION FOR NEWARK

Hard Work, Dedication, and Experience

I grew up on a farm in Indiana, where I learned the value of hard work, perseverance, and problem-solving. As a first-generation college student, I worked my way through school, earning degrees in geology and anthropology from Indiana University. My career began as a state geologist, tackling critical issues related to groundwater and public health. Later, I earned a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, driven by a passion for education, research, and addressing climate change—one of the greatest challenges of our time.

For the past 19 years, I have served at the University of Delaware, securing funding for innovative research and mentoring the next generation of problem solvers. With 30 years of experience working with government agencies, nonprofits, and private companies on environmental and policy challenges, I am ready to bring that expertise to Newark’s leadership.

Addressing Newark’s Challenges with Real Solutions

Newark is a great city, but we face real challenges that require a proactive City Council to help identify smart solutions. After talking with residents, I believe we must focus on:

  • Housing Affordability – Newark must work more effectively with state and federal housing programs to expand affordable housing options and ensure a diverse population can call this city home.

  • Parking & Infrastructure – Upgrading utilities, roads, sidewalks, and parking facilities is essential for safety and economic growth. By leveraging state and county partnerships, we can secure funding and expertise for these improvements.

  • Emergency Services – Our emergency responders need stable funding and resources to keep Newark safe. We must explore all opportunities to strengthen our police, fire, and medical response teams.

  • University-City Collaboration – The University of Delaware is a major part of our city’s identity, yet tensions persist. I will work to strengthen partnerships that support local businesses, drive economic growth, and improve quality of life for all residents.

Unlocking State and Federal Resources to Benefit Our Community

Given the infrastructure challenges our community faces, our next city council will need to focus on:

  • Securing More Grants – Many cities miss out on state and federal funding simply because they don’t apply. I will aggressively pursue grants for infrastructure, public safety, and community development. I know this may be a tough one right now given changes in our Federal Government, but that cannot stop us from staying dedicated to this funding venue.

  • Building Intergovernmental Partnerships – Collaboration with county, state, and federal leaders can bring new resources and cost-sharing opportunities to Newark.

  • Investing in Sustainable Infrastructure – Green infrastructure projects not only benefit the environment but also qualify for significant external funding. I will push for forward-thinking solutions that make Newark a leader in sustainability.

A Transparent, Inclusive, and Engaged Government

Newark’s City Council must be accessible, responsive, and accountable. We need a city council that will:

  • Host Regular Town Halls – Following the model of many state officials, I will create open forums where residents can voice concerns and share ideas.

  • Improve Online Engagement – Newark needs better digital tools for transparency, updates, and direct communication with residents.

  • Ensure Inclusive Decision-Making – Every community member should feel heard. If voices are missing from the conversation, we must actively reach out and create spaces for them.

A Fresh Perspective for Newark

I am not a career politician. My background is in solving complex problems, listening to diverse perspectives, and finding reasonable solutions. I believe in a Newark where families, retirees, students, and businesses thrive together. No single cross-section of our community needs to be overlooked or overburdened. By working with all of our stakeholders, I will ensure our city government reflects the values of our community—hard work, inclusivity, and innovation.

Join Me in Building a Stronger Newark
